Windows Serv 2008 – Monitoring Servers – Lesson 11

Windows Servers 2008 is capable of providing administrators with enormous amount of information about the status of the computer hardware, the operating system, and the applications running on it. In fact, for the busy administrator wanting to monitor server performance, the real trick is to winnow out the pertinent information from the extraordinary amount of everyday goings-on.  Throughout this chapter this is a review of what this lesson covers and what I extracted from it:

  • System Resource manager.
  • Event Viewer Console.
  • Reliability and Performance Console.

.

Event Viewer:  Contains tons of information that is happening inside your computer, from a simple information log to a critical warning that needs attention as soon as possible.

Event Viewer types of messages

  • Administrator tools
  • Security
  • Setup
  • System
  • Forwarded Events

Types of Logs:  There are several types of logs

  • Administrators
  • Operational
  • Analytic
  • Debug

Channel – This is the “proper”  term pathway to separate logs.

Performance Counters: Under performance monitor you can use snap-ins called performance counters. Performance counters allow you to monitor in a more granular level based on what you chose to monitor. Here are some of  its categories.

  • Computer
  • Performance Object.
  • Instance

RELIABILITY MONITOR

(This is a new feature that comes with Win Serv2008)

Bottleneck.  As it name implies is a congestion of traffic  where data does not go through the network as it normally would, due to high amount of data. Here are the some of the reasons why..

  • Increased Server Load.
  • Hardware Failure
  • Changed Server Role

Monitoring Processor

Marks:

  • Processor:  % Proc Time.
  • System Processor Queue Length
  • ServerWork Queue:  Queue Length (4tops)
  • Processor Interrupts / Sec

Memory Performance:

  • Memory Page Faults/Sec (Max value 5)
  • (RAM) (Tops 3) upgrade if numbers are higher.

Data Collector Set: Means of gathering, compiling and storing information from various sources

STEPS to create a Data Collector Set.

  1. Create set (add name)
  2. Specify type of data
  3. Add counters + ( sample intervals + secs)
  4. Choose storage location.
  5. Pick to begin the collector or save and close

Auditing

Tracks specific security-related events on a Windows Server 2008 computers.  In order to activate auditing, you must enable settings under group policy settings.

system logs:  Primary Windows 2008 operational logs.

Views in performance monitor-> Line, Histogram, Report, View.

Server Work Queue -> Less than  5

Windows Eventing: Windows generated logs.

  • RSAT :

Planning Server Deployment

The job of an IT administrator would sometimes include making a judgmental decision to pick the right type of server need to deploy at a productive enviroment. There are serveral types of Windows Serv, and each refine to accommodate a set of specific tasks

Objective:In this chapter I will learn to plan server installation and plan for automated server deployment.

  • Select a Windows Server 2008 Edition.
  • Perform a hardware inventory
  • Create and Deploy answer file and Image files
  • Plan large-scale deployment projects.

” you chose your Server edition based on:   Hardware(resources) , Features needed (demand) Price of the OS (budget)” – GzN

SOHO Router: What you need to know

Feel tired of paying a fee for your ISP router? Ever thought of getting your own box to play with the settings and finally be able to have control of your network?

FEAR not for setting up your own router is just as easy as setting up a dvd player? lol

  • MAC filtering.
  • WPA2-PSK pwd
  • Port forwarding
  • NAT/PAT
  • SSID management
  • IP addressing (DHCP enabled)
  • Wi-FI Protected Setup-  WPS
    • Make it way to add new devices tot he network
    • Avoid the complexity of encryption technologies
    • QoS ( Quality of Service)

ChromeBooks

Greetings!

It is 2016 and we are all into our phones, reading email and scrolling down through our social media wall feed ( Facebook, Instagram, Snap-chat)! Al L kinds of shirt. Therefore, by now you have come to realize the reason you purchased a laptop previous was mainly to the the interactions I just mentioned above.  And so if you are looking for something to do that, then the ChromeBook could be your best choice.

As it turn out, a ChromeBook can be really benefitial to run a small business or get in touch with

Considerations:

Web Based

  • Save on infrastructure costs
  • Automatic back-up and access from anywhere with your account and an Internet connection.
  • Multi share both data and hardware ( multiple employees can share a single device, yet each one can use their own unique credentials to access data)

Because Chrome Books are designed for the Web, they offer fast performance for Web-based activities.

Task Oriented

  • Data entry (sheets, docs, slides)
  • Call center (third-party apps)
  • Costumer Kiosk ( easy access to all store products from a single point)

Chromebooks devices can be an excellent, low-cost choice for task-oriented uses. like the ones mentioned above.

Affordable

Google Apps offer free or low cost versions of common business productivity tools, including e-mail , calendar, time tracker, costumer relationship management (CRM) and document, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.  Allowing companies to put their software budget toward marketing and expansion instead.

Manageable

ChromeBooks can be managed through a single online management portal -simplifying this task for businesses that may not have an IT department.

Before you go ahead.. must answer this three important questions.

  1. Can your business or employees get their work done using the Chrome ecosystem and its applications?

Chrome devices offer productivity through Google and Chrome apps and services, like Google Drive. therefore if you are already using these services, the use of a Chromebook would be beneficial for you.

Great For:

Collaboration

Access files from any device

Cost effective software solution

User-friendly Apps for Business.

Not the Best For:

Specific software

CAD solutions

Office

  1. Will your employees always have access to reliable broadband Internet?

While some apps can be used without Internet and the devices do include some storage, Chrome Book, devices are meant to be used online.

Great For:

Anything cloud-based

Not the Best For:

work abroad where there less reliable Internet access

  1. Are you ready to embrace a cloud-first computing model?

Explain that with ChromeBooks users will store all their apps and files that in some cases may include costumer or company data – hint hint (private information) in the cloud.

Great For:

share devices (that is the one computer everyone uses to X, Y , Z

work place with no IT support

 automatically backed up.

Not the Best For:

Business that deal with lot of private information

Mind you will be uploading data into the cloud.

Scared y cats who are not conformable storing files remotely.

This is what I have gather thus far with the use of ChromeBooks, it can either do wonders for you, or might not be your best choice. It really comes down to what are your primary needs.
